Terms of use
Last updated: 29 September 2026
These terms govern your use of Synapse, an anaesthesia teaching simulator provided by Hypnos Medical Limited ("we", "us", "our") at synapse.hypnos.one. By using Synapse, or by buying or redeeming access to it, you agree to these terms.
1. What Synapse is
Synapse is an educational simulator for anaesthetists, anaesthesia trainees, medical students and other healthcare professionals. Its physiology and pharmacology are deliberately simplified for teaching and will not match any real patient's response.
Synapse is not a medical device. It must not be used to make decisions about real patients, to calculate or check doses for administration, to set real equipment, or for any part of real patient care.
2. Access
- Free use. The simulator and a selection of core scenarios are free to use, with no account.
- 24-hour pass. A one-off payment unlocks every scenario for 24 hours from the time of payment. It unlocks the browser you bought it in, and gives you a code you can use to unlock up to three more browsers or devices within the same 24 hours. It is for your own use; please do not share the code.
- Access codes (vouchers). Codes issued to a course, department or institution give access for the period and number of people set when the code was issued. They may also be subject to that organisation's own arrangements with us.
Access is stored in your browser. Clearing your browser's site data removes it from that browser; you can restore it with your code while the code has uses and time left. We may change which scenarios are free and which need a pass, but not in a way that reduces a pass you have already bought.
3. Price and payment
The 24-hour pass costs NZ$4.99, including GST, as shown at checkout. Payment is processed by Stripe; we do not receive or store your card details. There is no subscription and nothing renews.
4. Refunds
If Synapse does not work for you as described, contact us within 7 days of buying a pass and we will refund it. Nothing in these terms limits any rights you have under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986 where those Acts apply.
5. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- share, sell or publish access codes, or try to obtain access you have not paid for or been given;
- copy, extract or redistribute the scenarios or other content, except for your own teaching and study;
- interfere with or disrupt the service, or try to gain unauthorised access to any part of it;
- use Synapse for any unlawful purpose.
6. Intellectual property
The Synapse simulator, its scenarios, text and design are owned by Hypnos Medical Limited.
The simulator's code is licensed under the PolyForm Shield License 1.0.0: you may use, study, modify and share it for any purpose except to provide a product that competes with Synapse. Using Synapse to teach is welcome; republishing it, or a modified version, as a simulator of your own is not. Versions before v4.68 were released under the Apache License 2.0, and copies obtained under that licence keep those rights to that version.
The scenarios you receive through Synapse, including the premium scenarios, are available to you only on these terms (see section 5), for your own teaching and study. The Hypnos Medical name and logo are not licensed to you.
7. Availability and changes
We aim to keep Synapse available and working, but we do not promise that it will be uninterrupted or error-free. We may update the simulator and its scenarios at any time. If an outage stops you using a pass you have bought, contact us and we will extend or refund it.
8. Disclaimer and limitation of liability
Synapse is provided "as is" for education. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Hypnos Medical Limited is not liable for any loss arising from use of the simulator, including any use contrary to section 1, and our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the previous twelve months.
9. Privacy
How we handle personal information is set out in our Privacy policy.
10. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The version on this page, with its date, is the one that applies.
11. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand, and the New Zealand courts have exclusive jurisdiction.
